I May Be Exactly What's Wrong With America

Regardless of your political affiliations or your opinions about Sarah Palin (and good gracious, don't get me started on either one), I think we can all agree on one thing:

We'd really like to see Mrs. Palin's head from behind.

Because, seriously, what's happening back there? What kinds of pins and scrunchies and hair apparatuses is she using to achieve that mound of hair on top of her head? I'm not necessarily going to say that I find the effect unpleasant, it's just that I've never really seen anything like it before. (In real life, I mean. I have seen it on a cartoon character .) I just can't figure out what she's doing, and it makes me feel the same way I feel when I see a really sophisticated magic trick that I can't figure out. Did I just call Sarah Palin's hairstyle sophisticated? I don't think that's what I meant. Anyway. In conclusion, Sarah Palin, I beg of you: allow your head to be photographed from behind. I'm losing sleep trying to figure out what is going on with your hair.

By the way, what's all this talk about sexism in politics?

I have to say that this was not the first thing I thought you were getting at when you stated that all of America wanted to see her head from behind...

And while that may be sexist, we all have to decide on what counts as sexism-- people have plenty of superficial discussions about male politicians and their hair (see: John Edwards), makeup, clothes, etc. etc. And let's not forget how much crap various Democrats have taken for engaging in sports and hobbies that aren't "manly" enough (i.e. windsurfing instead of shooting things, drinking wine instead of cheap beer, or playing croquet instead of "clearing brush").

I don't have any answers, I just know it's gonna be a huge pain for at least a few decades as we get over the novelty of having women in the running for the presidency/military leadership/etc.

I fear for Obama after the Republican spin masters use their puppet to destroy Biden in the debates. What truth can he speak without sounding like he's dismissing her and her inexperience because she's just a (gag) "hockey mom"?

I think you make a good point about criticisms of male politicians, although it does seem like the female candidates get more of it. And I don't know if that's because they're women, or because, like you say, it's 'novel' that they're running.

Your comment about the VP debates kind of scares the crap out of me, though. Ever since McCain picked her, I thought for sure everything would right itself at the debates, but you make a good point. It's pretty likely that whatever Biden says or does is going to be spun as unfair and condescending. Sigh.
